Getting ready for our first cold snap

We've been at Canyon Lake since May and have had a couple of cooler nights where we had to run the electric fireplace and even the smaller electric heater on low for just a bit, but the days warmed up to the 70's and we were fine. Friday night we're supposed to have a cold front come in with the low's to possible freezing on Sat. So on goes the propane heater I guess. We are curious to see how warm we'll stay in this 4 season's unit. We'll also be leaving a window cracked for condensation. Will keep you posted on the results. Thanks for letting me share.

RE: Window Surrounds..what have you done

We finally got the surrounds done (well, almost - 3 out of 5) and will finish the rest this week. The blue night shades are still with us and the top material has a touch of blue in it with browns, rusts, golds and taupes, so that hint of blue lets the blue night shades work. Would love to post pix, but I'm not good at that here for some reason. As soon as the new love seat comes in all the blue will be GONE! The surrounds were so easy - they were held up by 4 screws and came down all in 1 piece. A friend helped me and we measured 4 times...and cut the material too short! But we were able to piece it together and you can't even see the seams (really!) The floral material hides the seams perfectly and we matched it like wallpaper.

RE: If all else fails, there's duct tape!

UPDATE on the duct tape: First of all, Apollo 13 astronauts used duct tape to make a square peg fit a round hole and get back to earth - DH worked at NASA at the time and is speaking from first hand experience, not just the movie Apollo 13. It really happened that way. Duct Tape saved their lives...among other things.
BUT TO THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM: This technically challenged person didn't figure out that the stand has an extension on it and all we had to do is pull down on it and it extends. DH figured it out. DOUBLE DUH! We can see the pictures fine now. I feel so completely stupid....but I do love Gorilla tape too...and I'll have to try Gaffers tape. See how cool this site is? I love it! Thanks everyone!

RE: If all else fails, there's duct tape!

Is it a cheap one?
No! Originally $159...but one that was being discontinued as "last years model" from Best Buy - on sale half/price. They had 3 left. It's just that the stand is short. It has all the requiste buttons and options that really make it nice, in addition to 2 colors of frames. It won't be seen since it's on the back, but it just irritates the snot out of me that I have to gitch it up.

RE: Camping in Houston

Planning on visiting our son in Houston. Looking for someplace on Houstons west side between the inner and outer loop to park or camp for 5 to 7 days.
Good luck! The west side of Houston is Katy to me and I've been looking too. There are 2 in that area and both are full with Hurricane Ike evacuees - even at this late date. I called both last week. Brookshire has a cg right on the freeway from what I've been told - a KOA I think...not especially nice from what someone said. If you find one let me know, will ya? Thanks!

If all else fails, there's duct tape!

We just bought a nice large digital picture frame to have pictures of our travels and the family out in the open instead of just on the computer. We really like it except for 1 thing...it doesn't stand up straight enough - it leans way back and the stand part is too short...so unless someone can come up with a better solution, there will be an extension duct taped to the stand, making it longer. I can't help but wonder why this simple thing on the frame is so WRONG...who would design something like this? Looks like their engineer went on vacation...

RE: Bunny is so smart

Your dog sleeping on your bed also made me smile...reminded me of our big fat 17 lb. cat that loves to lay BETWEEN our legs at night. If we get up for a potty run, he jumps down with a little "singing voice" as if to say "Whatca doin' Mom?". He follows us everywhere, even in the middle of the night.

RE: Remote truck starter?

What a waste of fuel, I start my truck and go.
Well that's the beauty of living in America - different strokes for different folks. This feature is great if you live in cold country and don't want to freeze your hiney off first thing in the morning. Personally I'd prefer to go jump in a nice warm truck with the seats heated. Some tooches are tougher than others I guess.

RE: Fleas - Help me please

Don't know if you can use it on the cats, but my parents used to use Sevin Dust on their dog and yard and even in the house sprinkled on the carpet. But since cats lick everything it's probably not good on the cats or anything they walk on.

A couple next to us just pulled out yesterday with their 2006 NuWa...nice rig but they don't read this site, so I guess they'll find out someday.

RE: My turn...dropped 5er onto tailgate...lucky

My RV service tech in Phoenix saw that I had a BedSaver and told me they average one repair per week of a 5er that’s been dropped on the truck's bedrails. The cost is about $1K for the 5er and up to $4K for the truck. The BedSaver is very cheap insurance.
You bet it is! $200 versus $4500 in repairs...don't ask me how I know. GET A BLUE OX BEDSAVER!! I perwsonally think it ought to be a requirement for anyone towing a 5'er.

RE: My frustrating situation

And people wonder why insurance companies are so paranoid. Your place of residence is your trailer (which they won't insure if you "live" in it), the house is just "other" property. If you do suffer a loss you will probably be upset and post here when coverage is denied. By the way your AR tags are only good until such time as you establish residency or take employement in the state of TX. So at this time you have screwed the states of TX, AR, and the insurance company, and YOU are frustrated???..GO FIGURE!!!...:S:h...Brian
WRONG! I still live in Arkansas TOO...once the house sells, that will be another story. The house is not vacant - I still have clothes hanging in the closet and food in the pantry.

My frustrating situation

Our 5'er is sitting stationary...possibly for several years till we sell and rebuild or buy. We recently had it inspected, so it has the sticker on the tongue, but has Arkansas plates (lifetime). Truck has Texas tags. We will NOT be towing it anywhere for a very long time. Texas tags are $120 for the trailer.
Also, we still own a home in Arkansas but don't live in it - but go back from time to time. I recently called my insurance company and dropped our mini van and told them we were now living in Texas...what's the address..we live in the 5'er..."we don't insure the trailer if you live in it full time."...then we got disconnected. I waited a couple of weeks, called back like I had never called, said I needed to cancel the mini-van, they said "yes, ma'am!", cancelled it, and it's done. Now, I live in Arkansas, but am on vacation in Texas...with Texas tags on my truck and Ark. plates on my 5'er which will sit till we buy or build. Arkansas plates are permanent (I think - or 5 yr. plates, don't remember which.)

RE: Galveston Tx state park

I have good friends who park hosted at Gal. State Park last year and we visited them there. I'm sure it's wiped out. If the state of Texas has the funds in the budget, maybe, but who knows? I'd like to know too.

RE: I got all warm and fuzzy, and a tear came to my eye!

$3.09 in Sattler...but of course I paid $3.29 in New Braunfels, Tx. I live 1 mile from Sattler and figured it would be more expensive rural rather than in town...I was WRONG!

RE: Thinking of becoming seasonal?

Well, we started off to travel but DH's stroke and bad vision has caused us to rethink our original plans. Hooking up and moving requires is more labor intensive than either of us want and he gets confused easily. SO, we decided to sit stationary in Texas while we wait on our house to sell in Arkansas. We found a wonderful campground that is very neat and clean with tons of amenities for a great price that is only 2 hrs. from our twin daughters and 6 grandkids. We can each drive 1 hr. and meet 1/2 way and pick up the kids. When the house sells we'll probably end up building or buying something in this area...something that we can put the 5'er beside and use it for camping around the area periodically. But I don't ever see us going around the country full time as was our original plan...one reason is because our desires have changed...

RE: heartland 5ers

We really cked out the Landmarks when we were thinking of trading in, which we decided not to do. But if I didn't have a great Newmar, believe me that's exactly what I'd buy. They are well built units.

RE: Lake DeGray to Hot Spgs

You're gonna love both areas. If you don't need 50 amp service, opt for Section C for your site at Ouchita. Section A is for RV's as well as Section C, but C has 30 amp service...but the most gorgeous views of the lake and it's RIGHT THERE. We always do C. Hopefully there will be space available.
